A Good Meme - the Z-List

25/04: Posted by: Globally Local and categorised: General. [Perma Link]
Recently we have talked a lot about the theory of memes and getting involved with people but so far we have given little by way of examples that you can use. For example it should be clear that a meme is some activity that others copy and you yourself have copied.

In this post will be a practical demonstration of meme participation as well as an examination of the issues surrounding it.

A lot of memes are extremely self referential and of little interest to your readers.

This meme has been selected because it is not like that.

Participation is not pushed upon you - it is a voluntary undertaking.

Before we get into that, however, I am going to touch on some issues of any site that makes lists of top anything. The list must by it's very definition excluded most of the items for that category.

With blogging there is no difference. The so called A List of bloggers take the lions share of the attention and when listed as such this simply reinforces the current set up without allowing potentially better but newer bloggers to break into the public eye.

If an A List exists then potentially a B List of blogs and bloggers that are almost A List must also exist.

To follow on from this idea a Z List of utter unknowns might also be said to exist.

This meme is a somewhat subversive idea to take the very idea of the A List on it's head by allowing the community to grow and link to their own defined Z List.

It started here and we picked it up here

  • Create a new post on your blog
  • Copy and Paste the entire list of blog links below
  • Add any blogs that you want to include near the top of the list. (This isn’t compulsory, so you can either add as many blogs as you want or none at all.)
  • Include the blog where you first got the list from, on the list in your post
  • Do not include your own blog links on the list in your post
  • Make sure that all links point to each blog’s homepage
  • Publish the Post

  • Added to the list below is just one new link but everything else (including the link to us) has been left as is. Each of these sites are worth a visit and each one worth a read.

    Spike club and other Memes.

23/04: Posted by: Globally Local and categorised: Podcasts and Blogs. [Perma Link]
Spike Club is a Meme and a blog carnival. The aim is to simply get blog writers to talk about each other while at he same time having a little fun.

Each week it is the tern of a different blog to get a review. This week it was the tern of financial-independence.net so we sent Lord Matt to take a look.

financial-independence.net is a powered blog cum community on the subject of making money. It seems Stubsy has started the community as a personal project for getting out of debt (something I too have experienced the hard way, once before).

He currently has a cash give away which looks interesting.

He has been documenting the news that bank charges in the UK are largely illegal. more.

If you look down the left side bar you will see that you can create an account. While you would be advised that staying on topic is ideal you can earn some one way linkage by submitting content. On the whole this type of sharing also earns you friends which often become readers.

Lord Matt's advice today is to help Stubsy and see just how it can come back to you many times over.

Spike Club - review day: financial-independence.net

Our review will now focus o the platform used and how that has (or has not) effected the site.

Our first advice to all our readers is do not use Drupal. It is not sufficiently flexible or stable enough for a long term website solution and requires a very high level of expert skill to run effectively.

financial-independence.net is run as a blog although the software is actually set up to run as a forum and blog network (lots of blogs all in one place). The comment system is reasonably advanced by the look and feel is not all that special. Modifying a Drupal install to look nice is a mission not to be undertaken lightly.

Unfortunately once set up with Drupal it is very hard to move as I am sure Stuby is finding.

He makes good use of the built in keyword system to "tag" his posts (a good idea on the whole).

Overall it is not a bad site it is let down by the theme engine but it is made by the content.

Don't Let Negative Blog Comments Get You Down

20/04: Posted by: Globally Local and categorised: Podcasts and Blogs. [Perma Link]
    by Lynette Chandler

As your blog becomes more popular you are likely to notice that you'll get more and more negative comments on it. Even if you are generally the calmest person who can take this type of thing in stride it can get to you when you get this type of feedback on your personal space. Don't lash out before you take a deep breath and sit back. Here are some pointers to help keep you sane and take back your blog.

Your Blog Is A Public Place. Yes, people should respect your home turf; it is your blog, your rules and all that. But you really shouldn't be surprised to receive attacks and criticisms. One of the most powerful things about blogs is its social nature and few people get that.

If you can't bear to receive anything negative (true or not) then you don't need a blog. You need a private fan club.

Respond to the comment. No matter how difficult, you should acknowledge and respond to the nasty comment. Keeping silent is simply sweeping the problem under the carpet and that person is not going away until you deal with them.

Respond calmly even when you feel nothing close to calm. Most people need to take a few minutes, hours, or maybe even days before they can respond in a way that does not appear hostile, let the post simmer while you take that time to cool off.

Ask yourself if you can learn from them. While you're taking time to calm yourself down, think it through. Does what that person say have merit? Sometimes we may believe so strongly about something it's easy to say "They're wrong and I'm right" but think about it seriously, are they really wrong or are you just letting your pride and emotions get in the way?

If you are right, there's always something you can learn from the situation. For one, do not behave like that when you comment on other people's blog.

Be gracious in your response. If you've ever heard the term “Killing them with Kindness” then now would be a great time to put that into practice. It will make you look very mature and will also make the person who posted the comment look petty and foolish. If they see you can't be pushed around they will likely quickly give up.

Choose your words carefully and be judicious. There's a world of difference between saying "I'm tired of you attacking my blog, leave me alone and go away" and "I'm sorry you feel that way. I stand by my decision but can understand where you're coming from."

There are always many more people reading your blog then commenting. Even though they may not leave their calling card behind, you should know there are more readers than people who comment and it's the readers you want to keep on your side. So, if you tell people to go away as in the example above, they might really leave and never come back.

There's no need to reciprocate an attack. Doing so only makes you look like you condone bad behavior and more than willing to get into a fight with anyone who doesn't agree with you.

A blog is personal, and it's a look into who you are, or what your business is about. So if you blog for business that's all the more reason to not get into silly arguments with your readers. Don't forget that the people who are visiting your blog and reading it are possibly future customers or even business partners, treat them with respect and you will earn theirs.

    A Carnival of Resources

19/04: Posted by: Globally Local and categorised: General. [Perma Link]
Every once in a while as we work hard on bringing you more insight and more insiders info I notice just how big the resources list is. These are vital and often free resources that the new website owner is going to need.

In this article I will be listing websites that have or list quality resources that you may find useful.

Over time it is possible the pages linked to might change or be taken down so all the normal disclaimers apply. That out of the way let us begin.

Free Stock Photo's and Other Images - If you have ever tried to find something graphical to support a presentation or round of a page you may have tried to search for "free clipart" or something similar and found that most of the results are junk.

Bootstrap Design, by Shawn Hessinger has listed not one or two but seven (7) different sites that produce quality free images for professional use. (registration may be required, some conditions apply).

MyBlogLog is a vital part of both your social promotion effort and your statistical tracking if you run a blog or similar site. It has recently been purchased by Yahoo and so can be expected to last for quite some time. Our Reader Community is doing very well there.

The alternative is blogcatalog which is almost as good.

Reseller Program - In my opinion (possibly a biased one) this is a great tool for adding value and income to your site.

Buzz42 - Once you have set up your site you should be looking to set up links to your site from topical pages around the internet. Buzz42 allow readers to submit articles and this is a great opportunity to add a few links in an article that is topically related to your site. Not only will you get a small flow of readers to your site through it but you will also get search engine attention.

Buzz42 also have a MyBlogLog community here which should give you a good overview of topic areas even if it is not very well promoted at the moment.

How to Redirect Specific Blogger Posts - if you are hoping to escape from blogger then Thought Sparks' post on the subject of sending visitors on is going to be an important read.

Andy Beard - Niche Marketing - If you want to dominate your niche then you would do well to subscribe to the feed of Andy Beard who is a rising star of when it comes to this topic. For example this Google Blog Search post is a great primer.

Remove NoFollow - nofollow was a good idea that simply did not work. Now it tends to do more harm than good. This list (also by Andy Beard) is one of the most comprehensive lists n the internet of ways to get rid of the nofollow problem from almost every platform.

I have no doubt that you can expect to see more posts of resources in the near future.

    A Guide To Changing Webhosts

19/04: Posted by: Globally Local and categorised: Websites and hosting. [Perma Link]
    by Lynette Chandler

Here's a handy checklist for you to keep by your computer when moving web hosts so the move will go without a hitch

In the world of web hosting, practically nothing lasts forever. Of course, we all have web hosts that we've used forever not but sometimes we just go beyond our original plans and our web host doesn't have the ability to handle our new plans, or the price is just not what you're will to pay. Sometimes bad things just happen to good hosts and the support suffers for it and ends up not being the same as it used to be. No matter why you need to move webhosts, it's a bit of an upheaval so here are some things to keep in mind that you may easily forget otherwise.

    Backups
You can never have too many backups. First thing you do before anything else is to create a full backup of your website. This can be easily done using your web host's control panel.

    Emails
Make sure your email accounts are created over at the new host before you change the name servers. Don't forget email forwards. In the busyness of moving files and getting the website working, things like email accounts and forwarding tend to be forgotten especially if they are accounts you don't use often.

    Service Overlap
Don't wait till the last minute to move. Make sure there is some overlap in service between the old and new hosting account, preferably a week or more. Sometimes an ISP hasn't updated or refreshed yet and will continue sending traffic and email to your old site. You want to be able to log in to the old host to check for those straggler emails.

    Databases
This is rather unlikely especially when your website is powered by a database. The more likely scenario would be you didn't upgrade the script to reflect the changes. It isn't difficult to move databases but if you don't feel comfortable with it then you're better off to get someone else to do it for you.

    Page Redirects
Make sure your htaccess and cPanel redirects are re-setup properly. Often, people overlook the htaccess altogether because it may have been hidden from them or the new web host already has an htaccess file created. But just by having an htaccess file doesn't mean your redirects will work automatically because chances are, the one at the new web host is just an empty file. If you have any 301 redirects, you need to open up the htaccess file from your old web host, copy and paste it to the new web host.

    Paths
Different web hosts have different server setups. If you're moving a cPanel web host to another cPanel web host, this isn't usually an issue. If you are moving from one hosting system to another or control panel to another then you will have much more work to do in this case. If you're running scripts, check to make sure your scripts are referencing the correct paths. If you're changing the domain of your website as well, check your images and links too.

    Files Outside Your Public_html Folder
These files are not public and so they are easy to forget. You may have stored some backups, drafts or anything else you wanted to keep for later in here so be sure to check it and not leave it there.

    Forms
Seems obvious and easy to spot but not all scripts are in the forefront and forms are one of those. Maybe you haven't installed the form script on the new server or they have a different form mailer. Check that all your forms are working especially the contact forms.

As your site grows bigger, the more chance you'll miss things. Take a screenshot of your control panel file manager to see if your missing anything. It's a good idea to take an inventory of the scripts running on your website and to maintain this list as your build your website so that you won't have to rush around next time getting everything together. All the best of luck on your move.

How to earn a passive income with our reseller plans

18/04: Posted by: Globally Local and categorised: Business on the web. [Perma Link]
One of the best types of earning is the type where you do not need to do a lot of work. Granted you should not expect to retire anytime soon if that is your work ethic but passive and residual incomes can add strength to your business plan.

We all know that a small income stream can be earned from carefully applying adverts to otherwise inactive domain names - especially if that domain name has good SEO words in in but what if you could do that with thousands of domains and get other people to buy them for you? This article explains how our reseller packages can ethically be used to achieve such a dream by adding value for your customers just from the normal ebb and flow of business.

    Step One - Research
You will need to locate a niche with particular dynamics. The best source for this is the business and SEO sectors of the blogging and forum industry. Anything enterpeneurial should work well.

You are looking for an area where trading in domain names and speculating in domain real estate is likely to be something your niche can provide for.

    Your niche should have:
    • A disposable income. £20 / $40 a month should be enough.
    • Bright and intelligent people
    • Go getter's
    • Entrepreneurial spirit in large amounts
    • an interest in domain names

Step Two - Choose your plan
Before you start you will need a reseller package. You would be better off going for the more fully featured plan but if your budget is tight the lesser plan will still be suitable.

Step Three - Set a focused sales plan.
This is where you start to hook into enterpeneurial nature. You present your market with a simple idea that owning domain names, even if they don't use them off the bat, is a good idea. The truth is it is a good idea so you are not pushing a hard line here.

Consider the lowest margins possible on domain name prices or offer massive bulk purchase discounts. Even a marginal loss at this stage is no bad thing.

The need here is to shift as many names as possible so pile all the possible free extras in there before you start your promotion run.

Step Four - Push the plan.
To draw people to your sales pitch you will need to feed your niche that you identified from stage one.

A blog (sell yourself one at knockdown prices) will be your best friend.

Inspire you niche with domain name ideas and reward your customers by linking to and talking about the domains that have been purchased.

Make sure Google can find every domain sold - it's to your benefit to do this. Not only will your customers start with a good link but the secret passive income will also be boosted.

Step Five - Notice your commission report.
While you have been building up a valuable blog and domain (a commodity in itself) you will have also been earning a secondary income from the adverts automatically shown on all those parked domains.

    Step Six - Add value.
Some people call it "pimping" others call it "shouting out" whatever you call it linking to your customers is just good practice. After all, the more search traffic their domains get while they think what to do with them the more you earn in nice extra adverts.

Make a point of posting (assume you run a blog) at least once a day and linking to those domains in addition to your regular posts.

If a customer makes a site link to it, review and congratulate them. For while you have lost a single domain from your collection you have the opportunity to inspire your niche to make more such sites for which they had better grab the domain names while they are available.

Step Seven - Become a niche authority.
You should by now be well established in your niche (which hopefully has a domain related theme). It is time to take things further. With time and effort you can transform yourself as a brand into an authority on the subject of your niche.

In doing so you will draw customers that no one else can reach.

The longer you stay in your niche and the more knowledgeable you can become in that topic area the more you will dominate and the more you will sell.

All the while earning from your a href="https://www.securepaynet.net/gdshop/rhp/hottestreseller.asp?prog%5Fid=417084">reseller package but also doing very well from the advert earnings of thousands of parked pages.

Potential Easy Earner for Your Server.

17/04: Posted by: Globally Local and categorised: Business on the web. [Perma Link]
With this suggestion you could reap the rewards of being first in your niche to offer an integrated hosting and support package. Take a simple managed server package (or virtual private server) add a dash of WHM and produce a full on mini hosting solution for your niche.

You could even include a email, sub-domains, a forum, a ticket system and games all with the one login ID.

    Want to know how?

This potential comes not from us but from a package called quasi host which lets PostNuke (the content management system and framework) work with cPanel and WHM (available on all our server packages).

The result is a uniformed system from which you and your community can run one or more blogs, host a forum and provide hosting and email too.

Your niche and it's readers would not need lots of usernames and passwords just the one system to access everything.

While the QuasiHost Module is not free they do offer a free trail version so if you have spare capacity on your Globally Local server and want to make some money from it this module could be for you.

Globally Local and Quasitown/QuasiHost have no affiliation or relationship. The product described is maintained by a third party over which we have no control. This article is opinion only.

What we are dong for you

16/04: Posted by: Globally Local and categorised: General. [Perma Link]
While it might sometimes seem that we are not doing very much here at the domains and hosting section of globally local we are secretly hard at work bringing you the very best of the industry.

Here is a small run down of resources that we are currently preparing.

The GL Comprehensive and Reviewed Article Directory List
We have compiled a list of over 500 directories that provide articles that you can use to add value to your site. Over the coming weeks our team will be personally signing up for every last one and weeding out all those that do not measure up. Pages with pop-ups, spam or bad editorial direction are being removed while those that are well maintained and easy to use both for submitting or taking articles will remain.

Submitting your work to article directories is hard work but worth it for the flow of visitors it can draw in. Our article Them Links, Them Links tells you more about links and why they are good.

By proofing a very big list for you we hope to reduce the strain by only pointing you to good article directories.

However don't expect this to be ready by tomorrow as this sort of dedication takes time and we have been hard at work doing many other things.

    Code Class - Obit42-Base
Our dream is to create a socially interactive website here at globallylocal.com of which hosting will be only a minor part. To do this we must write a lot of code. Adullam Limited was founded to do this. Adullam Limited is the company that runs this site and that is who the team here work for.

As part of our commitment to creating the best code ever we have been giving our work away for free. code.Orbit42.com is where the code and information can be found. The project is written in php and forms a comprehensive base class. The idea being that the minimum requirements to go from idea to test case should be as short as possible.

We are currently at Version 2 and looking towards version 3.

blogclue.com - the standard for blog search
Using the Orbit42 base class (mentioned above) we are working to create an indexing and search system for blogs and related media based on linkage and tagging. As time goes on we shall be telling you about blogclue tags that you can use to automatically assign content pages to categories as you write them.

We wrote before in "Picking Your Topic For Fast Appeal" how you could get he most from such a system and how to select your tags.

Currently blogclue.com is a blank canvass on to which we will paint the definition of quality and invention. That sort of intention takes time and so you can watch as it unfolds with news both here and on-site later.

Matt has announced a cash give away: Get Lord Matt's Cash where you can grab his money by creating logo designs for blogclue.com.

    Total Platform Review
You may recall we have written about Choosing a Good Platform For Your Site. Finding the right system to use is not always easy. Even if you consider the large number of platforms just from the open source community you could be there forever.

We also published Essential Business Blogging Tools Checklist where we listed the tools you would need not be package but by requirement.

We have been busy testing and reviewing the software to meet these needs (platforms and business tools) and when we are ready to give our conclusion we will start to publish a series of guides to help you choose.

    Guide to our products
Don't forget that you can buy hosting and domain packages from us at any time. However we know that without some insight as to how they work you might not want to make that purchase.

You may (quite rightly) wonder what is in it for you and without a full low down might not appreciate how easy it is to use.

to solve these problems and help you decide if our packages are right for you we have also been drafting a series of guides to our best features.

    All this takes time.

So while it may look as if we are not doing much for you we are in fact working like mad to make the world a better place for you.

All you need to know about reselling

12/04: Posted by: Globally Local and categorised: Business on the web. [Perma Link]
There is no doubt that the best returns currently come from investing in a good reseller account with a trusted provider. The control you gain over price and promotions gives you the ability to respond much more flexibly than with a simple affiliate program.

However some reseller programs are not worth a thing while others are simply too hard to use. Yet others demand ongoing money upfront or other suspect demands. In this article I will sketch out the basis for identifying a good reseller package and how to tell if reselling is right for you.

So many people that sell reseller packages (as we do) harp on about the advantages of their particular offering without regard for the possibility that the package might not be right for everyone. Even if the package is not right for you they will still sell it to you.

They have missed the first of the basics about reselling. These same basics were the foundation of our own reseller package.

    1. Reselling requires commitment. It is not a fire and forget money spinner it is a tool that can allow you to muster the power of a much bigger company to make a nice profit which can potentially be quite large. If this commitment of time and effort is too much then no reseller package is right for you. Understanding that all profits require effort will help you spot those charlatans that try to sell you get rich schemes where the only winner is the person that started it.

    2. You should not need to keep paying money. The yearly renewals aside there should be no reason to keep making payments to the provider. Some rather less ethical outfits require that you provide a "float" that purchases the products while you take direct payment (but without the wholesaler discounts normally associated with this form of trade). Or worse they ask you to ensure there is a balance in you account to open things up.

Somehow you find that they keep having reasons why you need to send them money and all too soon you realize that you are getting poor very quickly.

A good provider should already have everything in place to seamlessly process customer payments and handle other website activities on an unbranded domain. (this is why the securepaynet.net domain is used for the packages we offer).

Aside from the purchase of the right to resell there should be little reason to hand over anymore money. After all the resale provider is still making some profit from your activities so why take you profits too?

    3. A good package should be ready to roll. Some reseller packages while processing things for you give you an overly complex template system and leave you to get on with it. While advanced branding is vital the body of the site should already be in place so that you do not use up your first year trying to hire web designers to get a site put up that you can resell through.

Some so-called resellers have been known to create packages so hard to use that 50% or more of their profits comes from the sale of packages that are never used.

    4. Providers should have confidence in their products. So much so that they are willing to do the heavy lifting (design, copy and recommended prices) for you. You should look for this because it shows you that the provider knows the product sells and is confident to let you share the market experience. This confidence tells you that the company fully expects your product to almost "walk of the shelves" (to borrow an old marketing phrase).

It also shows you that you provider is not frightened that you will outsell them and is happy to give you every chance to try and do so.

    5. Look for guarantees. At the very least there should be some sort of money back guarantee should you change your mind.

Because of our confidence in our package we offer a 30 day money back guarantee. What we offer will not be for everyone and potential resellers need to be able to test the waters nd see if it suits them without penalty.

    6. Expect documention. You should have access to support and advice from the outset.

For example our resellers have free access to the Quick Start Marketing Guide, the Reseller Handbook 24/7 support.

You should not be left wondering how to do things or where to find a feature. If the provider is not willing to help you then they are not willing for you to succeed.

    7. When the reseller wins everyone wins. A provider that demonstrates this knowledge demonstrates a commitment to helping you do well. This is something vital to look for in a package - that you will be looked after and helped to make those sales.

With our packages you will find that as much work as can be done to help you set up your own affiliate network merchant accounts is already in place along with a top class control panel that gives you the power.

This is done because if you prosper you will continue to resell for us but if you loose money all that will happen is you will give up. It is far better for us that you do very well.

Ideally I'd like to see all my resellers topping UK£25,000 a year (about US$50,000).

If ever you do not see that same level of support and expectation - do not sign with that provider.

    Essential Business Blogging Tools Checklist

10/04: Posted by: Globally Local and categorised: Business on the web. [Perma Link]
While your chosen platform should be able to handle the daily ins and outs of blogging easily and quickly if you are going to spend any time in this business sub culture there are certain tools that are a must.

These are things that you need to have.

I have not always specified a particular program as not only will your needs differ to mine but so will your budget. What I have done is outline what he tools need to do. I have in places offered guidance as to what you might consider.

Domain Name: You need your own domain, or a sub-domain of your company. If you are promoting example.com but your blog is example123.blogspot.com what does that say about your ability to set up a simple blog? At the very least you should be blog.example.com or example.com/blog (not as nice).

Browser: Which let's face it is Mozilla Firefox these days. Ideally you want to have the Opera and IE tab plugins so you can see your blog rendered in three different browsers. Check this regularly.

WYSIWYG Editor: (or text based for advanced users) a WYSIWYG (What you see is what you get) blog editor software that allows you to post to post to any platform with a known API is going to save you a lot of time. It would be ideal if the API supported by your editor match the API offered by your blog. Being able to save a draft for" editing tomorrow" is a nice bonus but most platforms allow posts to be added as drafts so don't worry about it too much.

Desktop Feed Reader: (If you have a palm top of PPC then a read for that too). By the time you come to be monitoring 50 blogs on a daily basis you will not have time to visit them all. This is where the feed reader comes in. A good desk top feed reader should take all your blogs and mush them into a giant super blog. Advanced features such as filtering for topic, tag or size are good as is headline only view. Then you pick just the topics that you wish to read. As your collection grows be sure your reader can grow with it.

Advanced Screen capture software: Pressing PrtSrc is OK but something a bit more helpful under the bonnet could be your best buddy if you want to talk about other sites. It's OK if you take one screen shot in every six month period but what if you want to talk about other peoples design changes or publish visually appealing how to guides?

Quality Image Editor: The Gimp is good although some commercial software might suit your needs better. If you are going to play with screen shots or post images you need to be able to crop, resize and convert freely between formats. You should also be sure that you understand the pros and cons of the following formats GIF, JPEG (jpg), PNG and BMP. All formats are not equal.

Organisation Software: Thoughts and notes organisation, be that David Allen’s "Getting Things Done" or Tony Buzan's "Mind Mapping" - pick your style and run with it. You need somewhere to organise things and ideally your notes, ideas, URLs, to-do list, questions and jottings all need to tie into this.

IM: An all in one Instant Messenger (like Trillian or GAIM) is something of a must as bloggers often like to use such systems to chat. You should be able to use a number of the popular channels (YIM, AIM & MSN) without opening six different programs. As it is Skype will need to be running on top of everything else if you need to use it to chat.

eMail: Full featured and web based email if you move about or a full-on desktop system with both server and client side spam protection. I recommend Spam Assasin on your server and ThunderBird plus plugins on your desktop. If you have not got the resources to run email on your blog's domain you might try Gmail which most people will not think unprofessional but you must consider the image you are sending.

Extras: You might want to make sure you have a copy of Open Office 2, a PDF reader and light but good media player sch as VLC. You will want these because they will enable you to open and access files in all the different formats you might get them. Open Office trumps MS Office as it can handle open document formats natively and will impress the geeks and technically minded types if you can demonstrate that you are not reliant on a single company (Microsoft in this case) for your data.

How and why to join a gang.

09/04: Posted by: Ben Blogs and categorised: Podcasts and Blogs. [Perma Link]
In school gangs were generally not such a hot idea. They tended to use the strength of the amassed group to bully and generally help the ring leaders get their own way.

Fortunately not everything is like school and joining a group of like mined individuals is, these days, far more focused on working as a group than pulling down others. This group membership can help you to promote your site by building a shared relationship with people likely to be interested in your site.

Such group activities as Spike Club and other are a good way to both socialize and co-operate with other sites (especially blogs and journals) in your topic field.

A Blog Carnival is a type of blog event. It is similar to a magazine, in that it is dedicated to a particular topic, and is published on a regular schedule, often weekly or monthly. Each edition of a blog carnival is in the form of a blog article that contains permalinks links to other blog articles on the particular topic.

There are many variations, but typically, someone who wants to organize a carnival posts details of the theme or topic to their blog, and asks readers to submit relevant articles for inclusion in an upcoming edition. The host then collects links to these submissions, edits and annotates them (often in very creative ways), and publishes the resulting round-up to his or her blog.

Many carnivals have a home page or principal organizer, who lines up guest bloggers to host each edition. This means that the carnival travels, appearing on a different blog each time.
    From: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blog_Carnival

It is worth noting that this form of promotion requires both active participation and a suitable site already matured into it's topic (and not created yesterday at midnight after lots of beers because you felt it might be a "cool idea").

This is because of a fundamental truth to site promotion - no mater how smart you work, you must still work. However, by joining in with activities suitable to your website and it's topics (even if this does co-promote sometime rivals) you will gain significant returns from the time and effort you put in. Returns not just in traffic and increased visitor rates but in the general satisfaction that comes from being part of something bigger.

Notes: More Details on blog carnivals can be found at the link you just skimmed past. Spike Club is not a simple carnival but should be good fun nevertheless.

jumping on a new meme is good for you.

05/04: Posted by: Globally Local and categorised: Websites and hosting. [Perma Link]
Memes are little games, challenges or other often copied activities that take place on the Internet.

Examples include the "five things I'm grateful for" meme where you list five things you are grateful for and then "tag" five other people to do the same. But most of the truly useful memes start by accident or are at least a lot less forced.

Like, for example, the one I am going to show you now.

Take for example the meme with the open challenge to make a page and rate first and highest for the phrase "SEO Challenge Number One".

SEO is a short hand for Search Engine Optimization and in the "good guy" sense of the word simply refers to those little things you can do to rate well. Things such as using descriptive titles, using the keyword in the body text when you talk about it (use the word and not the word "it") and other small but effective things (like getting linked to or adding links to).

Of course, it is easy to stray into the world of the "Black Hat" and try to cheat the system but sooner or later the system will find you out and you will loose out.

This particular meme stands out as a useful challenge because in order to come first you must pay attention to the entire site. You will want to make sure all your links work, that you have a site map, that you have set your titles to show the page title correctly... and so on.

It forces you to "think SEO" if only for a little while. But that little while could have a long lasting impact on your site.

Picking Your Topic For Fast Appeal

04/04: Posted by: Globally Local and categorised: Business on the web. [Perma Link]
While it might not be too good as a long term strategy to base your sites topical content on passing fads it can add a welcome boost to your inflow of fresh visitors.

Such an inflow can push your regular visitor count through the roof. However, if you want to hang on to those visitors there are a few things that you need to get in place first.

There are a number of sources of top topics with the most well known being Google Zeitgeist. From this you can identify the top topics for your target country (or just the entire world).

This alone will not, of course, help you at all. But if you can identify a connection between your site's subject and one or more of the listed words the you have a subject that could potentially draw a lot of visitors. More importantly you have not had to trick the visitors into coming and so have a chance of keeping them.

Do not do this until you have 10 quality pages (posts, articles or what-have-you) on your site.

    Why?

You need to have something to show the visitor what your site is about and what they could reasonably expect to find if they come back.

So you have a list that looks like this UK list:

    1. bebo
    2. argos
    3. facebook
    4. autotrader
    5. cbbc
    6. tesco
    7. britney spears
